Notes

Lamar County Death Records Book No. 1, p. 178, No. 1830: Mrs. Susan B. Turner, white female, 40 years, 8 months and 14 days, died 19 Apr 1907 in Pattonville, of lagrippe with pneumonia, by A. C. Biard, Pattonville.

Information from Ron Brothers: Online family records indicate that Susan (AKA Dolly) Virginia Poteet married James Marion Cherry on 21 Dec 1879 in Paris, Texas. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Jane Nixon of Tennessee whose brothers came to Lamar County in the 1850s. Her mother married three times, first to a Henry (or Thomas) Murray who was a sheriff in Little Rock, Arkansas. After his death, which is unknown, her mother then married Jesse Martin Poteet in Arkansas and he is believed to have died in 1867 there in Arkansas and reportedly only lived 9 months after the marriage. See the record of Elizabeth Jane Nixon Ewer. Some family members think Susan may have been a child of Mr. Murray. Others believe she was the child of Jesse Poteet. The online records show Susan’s birth as Oct 1866 in Cleburne County, Arkansas. Susan and James Marion Cherry (1859-1955) had two children: William Martin born about 1883 and Alice born born about 1884. William died in Hugo, Oklahoma 1 Oct 1958 and the death of Alice is unknown. Susan and James Cherry must have divorced as Susan is found to have remarried to a James Monroe Turner (1863–1920) in 1889. Lamar County Texas Marriage Record Book 11, p. 449 shows on 18 Sep 1889, J. M. Turner applied for license to marry S. V. Cherry. According to some online family records James and Susan Turner had the following children: Effie May (1890–1978); Claude Milton (1892–1958); Luther Benjamin (1893–1981); Marion Luther (1894–1944); Fred James (1896–1982); Alvis Omega ‘Omigger’ (1898–1963); Eva Marie (1899–1978); Maggie Mae (1902–1990); Esteller Elizabeth ‘Stella’ (1903–1991); and Mary Lucy Helen Turner (1906–1930). The family believes she was most likely buried in Shady Grove Cemetery as she lived and died close by in Pattonville. No grave marker has ever been found. Any descendant who knows about Susan is welcomed to add or clarify this record.
