THE PARIS NEWS Apr. 30, 1984: 'James F. (Jim) Townsend of Direct, died at St. Joseph's Hospital at 12:55 p.m. Wednesday, April 22. Services were held Friday, April 24, at the First Baptist Church in Direct with the Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home made burial in the Presbyterian Cemetery at Chicota. He was born Feb. 17, 1899, in Chicota, a son of W.L. and Elizabeth Ann Whiteside Townsend. He attended Forest Chapel schools and married Bertie Lee Thompson on Dec. 30, 1923. She died Dec. 30, 1984. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Chicota. He lived in the Chicota area until 1938 when he moved to Direct. He was active in work of the Baptist Church in Direct and was active in the Logan Creek drainage project there. He was a former member of the Direct school board and had been a trustee of the Forest Chapel school. Surviving are two daughters, Rebecca Stephens of the Georgia community and Janette Fain of Hopewell; four sons, Byron Townsend of Direct, Allen Townsend of Grand Prairie, Gene Townsend of Direct and Sidney Townsend of Unity; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Wakefield of Paris and Marie Collins of Arlington; and one brother, Leon Townsend of San Angelo.'
