LAMAR COUNTY ECHO Nov. 12, 1987. 'Florence E. Townsend of Cherry Street Manor, formerly of Chicota, died Friday, Nov. 6, at 3:25 a.m. Services were held Sunday, Nov. 8, at the First Baptist Church in Chicota with the Rev. Bruce Burk and the Rev. Tom Moore officiating. Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home had charge. Mrs. Townsend was born Jan. 10, 1897, in Lamar County, a daughter of Rufus N. Carley and Laura Deshazo Carley. She attended Forest Chapel schools and married John Davis in December 1915. He died Dec. 31, 1928. She married W.L. Townsend on Dec. 25, 1935. He died March, 1962. She and Mr. Davis lived in Forest Chapel until 1920 before moving to Grant, OK., and then Soper, OK. She returned to Forest Chapel after his death. She was a longtime member of the Chicota Baptist Church and had taught Sunday school in all departments there. The ladies adult Sunday school class of the church was named in her honor. She was active in church work for more than 50 years. She had lived at Cherry Street Manor for 6 years. Surviving are three daughters, Gladys Johns of Chicota, Joy Townsend, Rt. 6, Paris, and Laura Keller of Albuquerque, NM.; two sons, L.N. Davis of Dallas and Ray Davis of Chicota; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; three sisters, Evie McKowen of Eugene, OR., Alma Shipman of Sumner and Irene Penn of Hopewell; two step daughters, Lucille Wakefield of Paris and Marie Collins of Arlington; and a step son, Leon Townsend of San Angelo. She was preceded in death by a son, John Leroy Davis, in 1960.'
