LAMAR COUNTY ECHO Thu., Jan. 3, 1985: 'Birtie Lee Townsend, wife of James F. Townsend of Direct, died at her home sunday, Dec. 30, at 4:35 p.m. Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 1, at the Direct Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. Burial was in Chicota Presbyterian Cemetery by Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home. Mrs. Townsend was born Jan. 9, 1898 in Chicota, a daughter of John William Thompson and Ida Mae White Thompson. She attended schools at Forest Chapel and she and her husband lived in Forest Chapel until 1937 when they moved to Direct. She was a member of the Direct Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Rebecca Stephens of the Georgia community and Mrs. Jeannette Fain of Hopewell; four sons, Byron Townsend of Direct, Allen Townsend of Grand Prairie, Gene Townsend of Direct and Sidney Townsend of Unity; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Kate Patterson ofRupert, Idaho; one brother, John Thompson of Direct.'
