THE PARIS NEWS, 8 Jun 1962: “Mrs. G.F. Thornhill, 96, widow of a former Paris physician, died Friday in Amarillo where she had been at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Robert Coleman, the past six months. Her home here was at 824 W. Houston St. The funeral, Monday at 10:30 a.m. will be held here at Fry and Gibbs chapel, by the Rev. James E. Jones, associate pastor of First Methodist Church, where Mrs. Thorhill was a member. Interment will be made in Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives will be here at the home of Robert Coleman’s sister, Miss Miriam Coleman, 304 8th SE. Mrs. Thornhill leaves two daughters, Mrs. John Hammond New York, N.Y., and Mrs. Coleman of Amarillo, and nine other descendants. The former Mary Buckingham, daughter of the late Rev. T.B. and Clara (Gayle) Buckingham, Mrs. Thornhill was born at old Waverly in San Jacinto County, 18 Mar 1866. She was graduated from Chapel Hill Female College in Washington County, at the age of 17, and for three years was a principal in the public school at Chapel Hill. Later, she was principal of a junior college at Willis. She was married in 1886 to Dr. Gabriel F. Thornhill, a homeopathic physician, and their three children were born at Navasota. They came to Paris in 1900, and he practiced here until his death in 1915. The family lived for many years on Graham Street. Mrs. Thornhill was long active in church, civic and club work here, and was a member of the Twentieth Century Club of Paris.”
Mrs. Thornhill’s son, Gabriel Felder Thornhill, Jr. died January 8, 1954 in Austin, Texas. He is survived by her mother, two sisters, wife and son. Dr. Thornhill was reared in Paris, and was a graduate of Columbia Medical School, interning in New York City hospitals. He practiced medicine there about 10 years and headed the ear, nose and throat staff of Doctors Hospital. He had lived in Austin since 1935, and besides his medical practice, found time for much civic service, having been president of the Chamber of Commerce one year and a director, five years. He was regarded as one of Austin’s best known medical specialists. Dr. Thornhill was a 1907 graduate of Paris High School.
