Notes
THE PARIS NEWS, August 1, 1913: "Miss Gertie Thompson, twenty-five years of age, the eldest daughter of Green Thompson, a well known farmer who lives about four miles east of Powderly, was thrown from a buggy at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon and was almost instantly killed. She and her sister, Miss Louise, and Miss Oma Powell, the daughter of a neighbor, had just hitched the horse to the buggy for the purpose of driving to the Baptist church at Bounds (Lamar County) to clean it up for the services to be held today. The young woman had gotten in the buggy with the intention of doing the driving and the other two girls were still on the ground and were about to climb in, but just as Miss Thompson gathered up the lines the horse sprang forward. The unfortunate young woman was unable to hold it in check, and after it had run a distance of about fifty yards, and having vainly tried to hold it in check, she attempted to jump out and was fatally hurt."
