Obituary on file with the Lamar County Genealogical Society, 1977: "Rev. J. D. Thomas, 95, a resident of Blanton Gardens in Dallas, died Thursday, April 14, 1977, in Dallas. Funeral services were held Saturday morning in the Ed. C. Smith Chapel in Dallas, with the Rev. Julian Thomas of Dallas officiating. Graveside services were conducted Saturday afternoon in Evergreen Cemetery here by Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gary Regan officiating. Mr. Thomas was born in Blackfoot, Anderson County, Texas, on February 10, 1882. He was married to Josie Pearl Mauldin, who death occurred in 1957. He had made his home with a daughter, Miss Martha K. Thomas, 3210 Salerno, Dallas, since that time. He was a retired Methodist minister and had served as pastor of Garrett Memorial Methodist Church (now Oak Park) here from 1938 to 1940. He had been a member of the North Texas Conference of the Methodist Church for 42 years, serving in various pastorates prior to his retirement in 1952. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. Survivors include two sons, W. J. (Bill) Thomas of Paris and Jim Thomas of Arlington; a daughter, Martha K. Thomas of Dallas; two grandsons, Bobby Thomas of Austin and Bill David Thomas of Arlington, and one great-grandson, Jeremy Thomas of Austin." Submitted by Carol Campbell.
