THE PARIS NEWS, Thursday, September 8, 1960, p. 1, 4: “WOMAN CHARGED IN MURDER HERE. A murder charge was filed against a Paris woman Thursday morning following the fatal shooting of Peter Leroy Terry, 40, here Wednesday night. Charged in the shooting is Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson, 924 South Main. Terry, a painter who moved to Paris two months ago from Dallas, was shot one in the heart by a .32 caliber pistol and died almost instantly, police said. In a statement made to County Attorney Leighton Cornett following the incident, Mrs. Thompson maintained that shortly after 10 p.m. Terry came at her waving a hatchet, threatening to kill her, and she fired in self defense. She said two shots were fired. In the house at the time of the fatal shooting was an ex-husband of Mrs. Thompson, F. F. Wilson of Doniphan, Missouri. He summoned police to the scene. The scene was an upstair bed room on the northeast corner of the two-story house. The body was found lying near a door. Conducting an investigation at the scene were the Paris Police Department, County Attorney Leighton Cornett, Sheriff Earl Brown and Justice of the Peace C. H. Whitney. Whitney ordered an inquest on the death Thursday morning. Mrs. Thompson and Wilson were taken into custody following the shooting, but Wilson was released following questioning. Mrs. Thompson was still in Lamar County jail at noon Thursday. Sone of the late R. L. (Lee) and Ada (Markham) Terry, Peter L. Terry was born in Winnsboro, July 7, 1903, and was painter, his home being in Dallas. Surviving are his wife, Betty and four children: Bill Terry and two married daughters, all of Dallas, and Jackie Terry, in the United States military service; a brother Arthur Terry, McKinney; a half brother, Charles E. Terry, Dallas and a sister, Mrs. Blake Folsom, McAllen, besides his step-mother, Mrs. May M. Terry, 1127 E. Tudor St. here.”
THE PARIS NEWS, Friday, September 9, 1960, p. 1: “PARIS WOMAN FREE ON BOND IN SHOOTING. Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson, charged with murder in the shooting death of Peter Leroy Terry Wednesday night, has been released on $1,500 bond. She has waived examining trial and is now awaiting action of the Grand Jury. The murder charge came following Terry’s death in Mrs. Thompson’s home at 914 South Main, where he rented an apartment. Terry was shot one time in the heart shortly after 10 p.m. in an upstairs bed room. According to police, the shot from a .32 caliber pistol struck his heart and killed him almost instantly. Mrs. Thompson maintained in a statement to County Attorney Leighton Cornett that Terry came at her with a hatchet stating, ‘I’m going to chop your head off.’ The fatal shot was fired in an adjoining room seconds later, the statement reported. In the house at the time of the shooting was an ex-husband of Mrs. Thompson, F. F. Wilson of Doniphan, Missouri. He summoned police to the scene.”
THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, September 11, 1960, p. 4: “TERRY BURIAL. Last rites for Peter L. Terry, 40, a painter of Dallas and Paris, were held Saturday at Gene Roden & Sons Chapel, and burial made in Evergreen Cemetery. Bearers were Virgil Aikin, Paul Wood, Leonard Marcum, Ralph Taylor, Lee Gonzales and Wesley King. Terry’s death was caused by gunshot wound Wednesday night by a gunshot wound Wednesday night at 914 S. Main St., where he was living.”
