THE PARIS NEWS, Monday, July 3, 1961, p. 2: “FORMER BLOSSOM MAN IS FATALLY HURT IN CRASH. A former Blossom resident, J. W. (Bill) Baxley, Longview contractor, was fatally injured in the wreck of his pickup truck Sunday about 12:30 p.m., near Longview. Alone at the time, he was returning from his nearby farm, where he had gone to look after some cattle, and apparently lost control of the truck. It struck an oil derrick embankment after leaving the road. He died on the way to the hospital in Longview. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Spring Hill Baptist Church near Longview, Rader Funeral Home there having charge, and interment at 4 p.m that day will be in Red Oak Cemetery, north of Blossom. Gene Roden & Sons of Paris assisting in burial arrangements. Son of the late James Arthur Baxley and the former Bessie Lee Nelson, James William Baxley was born at Blossom, September 23, 1905. He left Lamar County 13 years ago to go into business in Longview as a building contractor, and was owner of the Pine Tree Lumber Company there. He leaves his wife, the former Cleo Norton; a son, James Marvin Baxley; three sisters: Mrs. John Boren and Mrs. Jess Hart Blossom; Mrs. Alvie Duggins, Kilgore; Mrs. Floyd Acree and Mrs. Henry McKinney, Sr., and also a brother, John A. Baxley, all of Longview.”
THE PARIS NEWS, Friday, October 25, 1940, p. 1, 6-9: Draft numbers, with the names and addresses of all the men who registered under the Selective Service Act October 16, are to be found in the Paris News today. The series of both Lamar County boards, totaling 5,791 names, are to be found from pages 6 to 9. The numbers are listed serially and it will be necessary to check the list until the registrant’s name can be found. With the vast number of men registering, it was impossible to arrange the names in alphabetical order after they had been serially arranged by the draft boards.
