THE PARIS NEWS, Tuesday, December 16, 1958, p. 9: “Joe H. Burrus. Paris News Service DEPORT — Joe Howard Burrus, descendant of early-day Deport settlers, died Sunday night in a hospital at Tyler after long illness. A director of YMCA camp work at Baytown 22 years, he had moved recently to Tyler when his health failed. The funeral will be held in Deport Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Methodist Church, of which his father was one of the eight charter members. The Rev. P.G. Hightower of Pickton and the pastor here, the Rev. W. E. Grisham, will officiate, Grant Funeral Home to make burial in Highland Cemetery. Born in Deport, July 28, 1889, Mr. Burrus was a son of the late J. A. and Josephine (Thompson) Burrus, his mother having been a sister of Dee Thompson for whom the town was named. He married Miss Johnnie Roden in 1912, and they had lived since at Telephone and Bonham in Fannin County, and at Baytown. His wife survives, besides two sons, Joe Howard Burrus, Jr., of Milwaukee, Wisc., and James Burrus of Alice; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ina Mitchell, Natchitoches, La., and Mrs. Florence Perry Gray, Dallas, and a brother, Jack Burrus, Tyler.”
