THE PARIS NEWS, Thursday, December 19, 1974, p. 9: "[picture] J. G. BRUNSON SR. . . . funeral Friday. Retired Area Schoolman Dies Here. Funeral services for J. G. Brunson, Sr., 617 Fitzhugh retired Lamar County School superintendent, farmer and rancher in the Arthur City, Chicota area, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Guy Regan pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will officiate and burial will be in Meadowbrook Cemetery. Mr. Brunson died at 4:45 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Hospital. He had been in ill health the past few years. He taught in Lamar County schools for 35 years and served as county superintendent from 1939 until 1947. He had taught at Forest Chapel, Chicota, and Minter schools and was principal of Delmar school from 1947 until 1952 when he retired. Born Jan, 4, 1894, in Gattman, Miss., Mr. Brunson was a son of J. D. and Violet (Smithson) Brunson. He attended East Texas State Teachers College and North Texas University. He married the former Miss Ethel Patterson on April 30, 1918, in Verona. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and its Builders Class, a former member of the Paris Lions Club, the American Legion, Paris Masonic Lodge and a life member of the Texas State Teachers Association. He was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Joe Billingslea Jr. of Greenville; a son, John G. Brunson, Jr. of Arthur City; seven grand-children; five great grandchildren and four brothers: Porter Brunson of Tuscumbia, Ala., Bascom Brunson of Moscow, Tenn., Tillman Brunson of Bruce, Miss. and Frank Brunson of Tupelo, Miss. The family will be at the Brunson home 617 Fitzhugh."
