THE PARIS NEWS, Thursday, 5 Sep 1996, p. 4B: “(Picture) Martha Jane Brothers, 92, of Powderly died Wednesday, Sep. 4, 1996, at McCuistion Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sep. 7, at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilbur Simmons and the Rev. Mike Jones officiating. Burial will be in Long Cemetery in Powderly. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Brothers was born Sep. 2l, 1903, in Lamar County, a daughter of Ben and Mary Maddox. She married Roy P. Brothers who preceded her in death in 1970. She was a member of the Powderly Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Emma Westbrook of Powderly, Birmah Bean of Paris, Gwendolyn Pope of Houston and Sharon Lynch of Clarksville; three sons, Duane Brothers of Augusta, GA, Thomas Brothers of Mesquite and Ben Brothers of Canyon County, CA; 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters, Barbara Faucett and Dorothy Jean Rajac, and 2 grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Billy Westbrooks, Benny Westbrooks, Ron Brothers, Randy Brothers, John Pope Jr., and Jimmy Rajac. Honorary bearers will be Leslie Taylor, James Bean, John Faucett and Harold Westbrooks.“
Information from Ron Brothers, Reno, Texas: Martha was a daughter of Ben Stuart and Mary Magdeline Reed Maddox. She was born in the old Palestine community of Lamar County, Texas. She married Royal Pantha Brothers, son of James Bennet Brothers and Martha Etta Nichols Brothers, in Lamar County. Martha and Roy Brothers had nine children: Birmah Ellen Brothers, who married William Nagreen and James H. Bean; Gwendolyn Mignon Brothers, who married John William Pope Sr. in Hugo, Royal Duane Brothers, who married Louise Mildred Clark in Georgia; Dorothy Jean Brothers, who married William Rajac; Thomas Glynn Brothers, who married Artie Mae LaRue in Paris; Bennie Royce Brothers, who married Anna Lisa Franson and Doris Ann Dunmon; Emma Lois Brothers, who married Harold Lloyd Westbrooks in Texarkana; Barbara Ann Brothers, who married Johnny Dee Faucett in Paris; and Sharon Diane Brothers, who married Michael Lynn Doyal and Gary Lynch. As a young girl she was a member of old Palestine Methodist Church. After marrying, she joined the Powderly Baptist Church. She was a housewife all her life and had not lived away from the Palestine (later called Powderly) community but only a couple of years of her entire life.
