THE PARIS NEWS, Saturday, Oct. 7, 1922: "J. R Brittain, a well known traveling salesman out of Paris, died at an early hour yesterday morning at a hospital in San Angelo, after an illness of about ten days. He was taken sick while on the road, stricken with carbuncles and his death was due to complications. The remains will be brought back home for burial. They are expected to arrive on the 12:55 Santa Fe train this afternoon. The funeral service will be held at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the family residence on Graham Street and will be conducted by Rev. P. B. Wells of the First Methodist Church. Mr. Brittain was born in Tennessee and was 64 years old. He had lived in Paris twenty-five years, during all of which time he was a traveling salesman, and he had a great many friends among the profession on account of his pleasant address and sociability. He is survived by a wife and a son, John R. Brittain, Jr., who reached his bedside a short while before he died. Besides his wife and son, he leaves several brothers and sisters."
