THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, April 18, 1943, p. 4: "Veteran Peace Officer Dies -- [picture] J. A. (ALVIN) BRIGGS. Death of James Alvin Briggs of Rt. 2, Direct, Maxey community occurred Friday at 3:45 p.m. at his home after about two weeks' illness. He had been constable of Precinct 6 about 28 years. Born October 10, 1875, in Cass County, he had lived here 50 years, engaging in farming as well as serving as a peace officer. The Rev. W. R. Davis, Baptist pastor, conducted funeral services Saturday at 5 p.m. at Maxey Church, and Brown-Roden Funeral Home made internment in Tigertown Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Strother, R. O. Hindman, Thomas Swint, J. H. McCreight, S. E. Burton and J. F. Hood, members of the Lamar County sheriff's force being designated honorary pallbearers. He leaves his wife, the former Mrs. Ethel Burrow, and these children: Mrs. Roy Parks, Paris; Mrs. Reid Caldwell, Dallas; Mrs. Robert Hindman, Bonham; Mrs. Eugene Peek, Tremonton, Utah; Homer and Herman Briggs, Houston; Miss Jeanette Briggs and Barney Briggs, Maxey; nine grandchildren, and these brother and sisters: A. Briggs, Tigertown; Dee Briggs and Mrs. Eula Jackson, Dove Creek Colo.; Mrs. John Farris, Texarkana; Mrs. Netta Little, Selfs, and Mrs. Beulah Collins, Midland."
