BONHAM DAILY FAVORITE, Honey Grove, Texas, Tue, May 20, 1943, pg 8: “Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Brackeen have received message from the War Department informing them that their son Samuel James Brackeen, 27, was killed in action in the North African theater of war on March 29. Brackeen was inducted into the Army Jan. 17, 1942 at Camp Wolters, Texas, and received his training at For Bragg, N.C. He is survived by his parents, three sisters and five brothers." Submitted by Carol Campbell.
THE PARIS NEWS, Honey Grove, Fri. May 21, 1943: Pvt. Samuel J. Brackeen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Brackeen, living three miles east of Honey Grove, was killed in action, March 29, in the North African area, his parents were informed in a telegram May 14, from the Adjutant General’s Office, the message stated that a letter would follow. Pvt. Brackeen, who parents live now on the Walter Johnston farm, was reared in the vicinity of Direct, northeast of here. His body was brought from Africa back to the US in May of 1948 aboard the U. S. Army Transport ship named 'Barney Kirschbaum.' His reburial was in Georgia Cemetery." Submitted by Carol Campbell.
Buried next to John W. Bracken. Tombstone is inscribed, "Texas Pvt. 47th Infantry World War II."
