THE PARIS NEWS, 26 Sep 1955, Monday, p. 5:
“J. W. Brackeen --
John W. Brackeen, 77, a retired farmer living at Direct, Rt. 2, Sumner, died Sunday about 5 a.m. at Lamar General Hospital here, after illness. He was born in Lamar County, August 21, 1878, son of the late Mr. amd Mrs. Woodsen Brackeen.
Funeral services, Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., will be held at Direct Church of Christ by Leonard Coker and Bill Jones. Fry - Gibbs Funeral Home will make burial in the cemetery in Georgia community.
Mr. Brackeen leaves his wife, the former Miss Florence Ashley, and two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Brown, Sumner, and Mrs. Talma Leatherwood, Commerce; five grandchildren, one great - grandchild, and these sisters and brothers: Mrs. Dan Porter, Blossom; Mrs. Will Couch, Plainview; S. T. Brackeen, Jenks, Okla., and Frank Brackeen, Lubbock.”
THE PARIS NEWS, Tue, Sep 27, 1955: “Services for John W. Brackeen of Direct Community were set Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Direct Church of Christ, Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home making interment in Georgia Cemetery. Leonard Coker and Bill Jones had charge, pallbearers being Burton Fortenberry, Commerce; John S. Porter, Paris; Cleo Helms, Roy Smith and Grover Self, Direct, and Raymond Copeland, Selfs community. A retired farmer, Mr. Brackeen, 77, died after illness early Sunday in a Paris hospital.” Submitted by Carol Campbell.
On the same stone with Florence E. Brackeen. The surname is spelled ‘Bracken’ on the stone but is next to a Samuel J. Brackeen.
