THE PARIS NEWS, Thursday, February 16, 1939, p. 1: “BIKE-CAR CRASH HERE NEGRO GIRL STILL UNCONSCIOUS AFTER COLLISION. Virginia Bolden, 16-year-old Negro girl, was in a serious condition in the Lamar hospital Thursday after a bicycle she was riding collided with an automobile on North Main street about 6 o’clock Wednesday evening. She was still unconscious Thursday morning. The automobile was driven by O. E. Coley, Dallas traveling man, who was absolved of all blame by investigating officers. City Marshal W. A. Walter, City Patrolman Troy McCormick and State Highway Patrolman Charles Brand, who investigated the accident, reported the automobile was going north on North Main street when the girl dashed from Tudor street, going west. Indications when officers arrived at the scene were that the girl’s wheel smashed into the side of the automobile, her head striking the door handle. Coley brought his car to a stop and the girl was rushed to the Lamar hospital. Physicians reported she was suffering from serious head injuries and possibly a skull fracture. She suffered a fractured jaw and serious body bruises. The girl is the daughter of James and Minnie Bolden, 315 North Fifteenth street. Bolden is employed by the Pete Humphries company here.”
