Notes
THE VINITA LEADER, Vinita, Oklahoma, Thursday, January 17, 1935, p. 1: “BERRY FUNERAL HELD AT 2:30 THIS AFTERNOON. Burial of County Employee to Be Made Friday at Paris, Texas. COURT HOUSE CLOSED DURING FUNERAL HOUR. Deputy Treasurer Thought to Have Drowned Self Wednesday. Funeral services for C. O. Berry, deputy county treasurer and treasurer-elect were held at 2:30 this afternoon from the Burckhalter Funeral Home. Services were conducted by the Rev. Lon Eakes, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and music was furnished by member of the choir. Honorary pall bearers were C. H. Riedemann, Dr. C. S. Neer, J. C. Highland, Chas. Schneider, J. W. Gump, G. M. Raines, J. D. Thomason, Carey Caldwell, Elmer Gentry, H. S. Knight, Joe Fredreick, W. F. Friend, C. H. Collins and R. J. Wright. The funeral party will leave here early Friday morning for Paris, Tex., where burial will be made at 2:30. All offices in Craig county courthouse were closed today during the hour of the funeral service. Berry was found about 9:30 Wednesday morning in a shallow pool of water on the Frisco right of way one mile west of Vinita, where he had drowned. His hat, coat and overcoat were found on the bank, which led to the theory that his death was suicide. Berry had been a deputy in the county treasurer’s office for 12 years, and the last election was elected county treasurer to succeed E. M. Landrum. He would have taken office in July. He is survived by his widow and two children, Mrs. Margaret Clark and James W. Berry, both of Tulsa.”
CRAIG COUNTY DEMOCRAT, Vinita, Oklahoma, Thursday, January 24, 1935, p. 3: Funeral services were conducted in Vinita last Thursday for C. O. Berry, and the body was taken to Paris, Texas, where interment was made in the cemetery at that place.
On the same stone with Mattie Estelle Berry.
