Notes

THE PARIS MORNING NEWS, Friday, July 6, 1917, p. 5: "NERVOUSNESS DRIVES A PATIENT TO SUICIDE -- S. Beckner of Bryceland La., about 40 years of age, who was an extensive lumber mill operator in Louisiana and Oklahoma, and was president of two lumber companies, killed himself in his room in the third story of the Sanitarium shortly before 3 o'clock yesterday morning while momentarily left alone. A .38 caliber automatic pistol was the weapon used. The muzzle was placed to the left side of his head about two inches above the ear and the bullet passed entirely through, killing him instantly. The deceased came here a few days ago for treatment for nervousness and was accompanied by his wife and nephew. The latter occupied the room with him and kept a close watch over him but at the time of the tragedy he happened to be out of the room for a while. The unfortunate man showed marked symptoms from the time that he was brought to the Sanitarium of being mentally unbalanced, on account of excessive nervousness, but he was considered harmless. About 2 o'clock the nurse entered the room to give him his medicine and he refused to take it. She then called to Harry McCuistion, a night attendant, and got him to go in the room and stay until she could telephone Dr. McCuistion for advice. When Harry McCuistion entered he found the patient sitting and the window, which he had raised, and he pulled him away from it and closed it down. The man tried to go back to it and they had quite a struggle. The patient after the scuffle stepped into a closet and go something from his suit case and came back toward Mr. McCuistion and held his had out. The young man couldn't tell what it was he held in his hand, but he backed off and asked him what was the matter. The man panted with labored breath and grunted and mumbled something in response, which could not be understood. Harry McCuistion finally got outside of the room and asked a day attendant about the place to watch the door until he could summon help. In the meantime the nurse had telephoned Dr. McCuistion, who gave instructions not to go to his room any more until he could get there. The doctor hurried to the place, and just as he was ascending the stairway a pistol shot was heard in the patient's room while the day attendant was still standing guard outside the door. When the room was entered the man was found lying on the floor on his back in a position indicating that he got down on the floor to shoot himself. Dr. McCuistion went to the home of Justice of the Peace Mike Brady and carried him to the Sanitarium to hold an inquest. After viewing the body the justice took the testimony of the doctor and Harry McCuistion. The body was then carried to the undertaking establishment and was prepared for burial. It was shipped over the 3:25 o'clock Santa Fe train in the afternoon for Shreveport."
