THE PARIS NEWS, 6 May 1963: 'Leonard G. Beard, 72, farmer of Maxey community, Sumner, Rt. 2, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at home, Monday about 9:30 p.m. The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Fry and Gibbs chapel, Paris by the Rev. J. L. Wideman, and burial made in Mount Vernon Cemetery at Maxey. Born in Lee County, Mississippi, 9 Oct 1890, Leonard Guy Beard was a son of Henry and Docia Beard. He came to Lamar County in 1911, and was a member of the old Mount Vernon Baptist Church at Maxey, long active in the Maxey Community Center program and other affairs there. He married Miss Ethel Welch of Maxey in January, 1913, and she survives, besides two sons, Jack Beard, Paris, and Wayne Beard, Texas City; five grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Homer Diggs, Paris, and a brother, Jesse Beard, Garland.'
