Notes

THE PARIS NEWS, October 10, 1954: “One of Paris’ best-known sports figures, Burly Baty, was killed early Saturday in an auto-truck crash near El Paso. Baty was head coach at Bowie high in El Paso, and had been on a football scouting mission with two of his assistants. One of the assistants, Line Coach Jerry Simmang, also dies in the crash and Backfield Coach Fred Rosas was in fair condition at an El Paso hospital where he was taken after the wreck. Paris friends an fans of Bay were shocked to hear of his death. They had watched him star in football at Paris High and Texas A&M then step successfully into the coaching profession. Baty, 30, was in his fourth season as head coach at Class AAAA Bowie of El Paso. His team won the district title and went into the state play offs last year. Baty graduated from Paris High in 1942, played at Texas A&M before and after World War II, and coached at Luling High two seasons before going to El Paso. The fatal collision occurred shortly after midnight on U. S. 80 about 30 miles east of El Paso. State Patrol St. James Mason said a truck driven by Robert Elmer Moor of Spur apparently was on the wrong side of the road. Moore was uninjured. His trailer type truck, carrying cotton seed, overturned after the collision. Baty’s Bowie team had beaten El Paso Cathedral, 33-6, on Thursday night. The tree coaches were returning to El Paso after scouting Peco’s 33-7 win over Kermit. Bowie plays Kermit in two weeks. Baty’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Baty, live at 550-15th SE in Paris. His wife is the former Miss Betty Hutchinson of Paris. Her mother, Mrs. A. Hutchinson lives at 317-6th SE. The Batys had one son, four year old Robert Gaines. Survivors include three brothers and a sister, Earl Baty and Harold Baty of Paris, Albert Baty of Wichita Falls and June Baty of Paris. The three brother played football at Paris High and June is presently drum major at Paris High School. No funeral arrangements had been completed here lat Saturday, but the body was to be returned to Paris for burial. Fry & Gibbs Funeral home is in charge. Relatives went to El Paso earlier Saturday to complete arrangements for having Baty’s body brought here.
