THE LAMAR COUNTY ECHO, 8 Jun 1989. 'W.A. (Bill) Bates, 77, Rt.6, Paris, died at St. Joseph's Hospital Sunday, 4 Jun 1989. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, 7 Jun, in Bright-Holland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Black and the Rev. J.T. McNabb officiating. Burial was in Providence Cemetery. Masonic graveside rites were conducted by Blossom Lodge 303. Mr. Bates was born 12 Mar 1912, in Deport, a son of Odie and Aslee Trantham Bates. He married Clara Clarkson on 3 Jun 1932, in Paris. He was a retired Precinct 4 constable, serving 20 years. He retired as a bus driver from the North Lamar and Lone Star school systems after 20 years. He was a Baptist and member of the Blossom Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite bodies of Dallas. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Betty Low of Detroit, Wanda Hart of Paris and Billie Jennings of Plano; one son, Alvis Bates of Paris; two sisters, Mrs. Bert Boggs of Youngtown, Ariz., and Kate Wynn of Yuma, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lula Plant, and a grandson, Tommy Low, in 1963.'
