THE PARIS NEWS, Monday, May 4, 1984, p. 4: “Mrs. Sarah T. Bates. Mrs. Sarah T. Bates, Rt. 1, Powderly, died Monday, April 30 at at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.. Thursday, May 3 at Bright-Holland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Garvon Golden officiating. Burial will be in Red Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Bates was born Aug. 27, 1887, in Mansfield, La., a daughter of William and Melissa Pearce. She was married to David A. Bates on Oct. 21,1906, in Holly, La. He preceded her in death on May 24,1915. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Ruby) Westbrooks, of Powderly; two brothers, C. A. (Dub) Bates, of Powderly; Leonard Allison Bates, of Indianna, Penn.; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.”
