LAMAR COUNTY ECHO Thu., Apr. 11, 1985. 'Chalmers A. Bates, Rt. 1, Powderly, died at St. Joseph's Hospital at 4:20 a.m. Thursday, April 4. Services were held Saturday, April 6, at Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Garvon Golden officiating. Burial was in Red Hill Cemetery. Mr. Bates was born Feb. 4, 1912, in Mansfield, LA., a son of David A. Bates and Sarah T. Pearce Bates. He attended Mansfield schools and married Esther Berry on Nov. 3, 1955, in Maryland. They lived in Pennsylvania most of their married life, where he was an oil field worker. They moved to Powderly in 1973. He was a member of the Mansfield, LA. Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Wood of Amite, LA.; one son, David Bates of Shreveport; one step-daughter, Gwen Drakula of Emporium, PA.; one step son, Joseph Henderson of Boston, MA.; 10 grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Charles (Ruby) Westbrook of Powderly; and one brother, L.A. Bates of Indiana, PA.'.
