Notes

From an undated-unnamed newspaper obituary clipping from 'The Paris Scrapbook' donated by Skipper Steely; Handwritten date; August 14, 1915. 'Dr. William Jefferson Barton, an old resident and highly respected citizen of Paris, died at 2:20 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home on South Seventeenth street. He had been in feeble health for some time and his death was not altogether unexpected. The funeral service will be held at 5:30 o'clock this afternoon at the First Presbyterian church and will be conducted by Rev. T. M. Lemly, the pastor. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. The deceased, who was a polished, scholarly, dignified man and of a high type of Christian character, was born in Akersville, PA, May 13, 1848. After teaching school several years in Missouri he returned to his native state and attended the Philadelphia Dental College, from which he graduated in 1873. In the fall of the same year he moved to Texas, stopping a short while at Brookston, which was at that time the terminus of the Texas and Pacific railroad, and them coming to Paris, which had since been his home. He practiced dentistry until a few years ago and was quite active in dental associations, being one of the five who first organized the International Dental Congress, which first convened at the World's Fair in Chicago. Dr. Barton married Miss Mary Hengy of Holden, MO, in 1876, and is survived by his widow, three daughters and four sons. The daughters are Misses Marie, Bertha and Pauline Barton; and the sons are W. J. Barton, Jr. of Ashville, NC, Max C. and Carl W. Barton of Paris and Cecil E. Barton of Clarksville. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. R. R. Donham of Morse, Kansas, and the following brothers; J. G. Barton of Golden City, MO, J. E. Barton of Norfolk, VA, C. L. and Frank Barton of Vashner, WA. The deceased was a prominent member of the First Presbyterian church, having been an elder for years, and was a member of the Woodmen of the World.'

On the same stone with Mary Hengy Barton.
