Notes

THE PARIS MORNING NEWS, Sunday, Dec. 14, 1924: 'A Big Colored Funeral Today-- To Be Held at Beulah Hill Baptist Church at Razor for Oldtime Darky-- Gilbert Barr, an old-time darky who had been staying on the farm of R. J. Haynes of Razor a long time and was thought well of by all of the white people for the good influence that he exercised among the young of his own color, died Friday evening of dropsy, a malady that he had been afflicted with for some time. H. B. Townsend of Chicota, who was in the city Saturday, said that as soon as his last breath left him the bell at Beulah Hill Baptist church at Razor began to toll and everybody quit work according to custom. When one of the darkies dies he said, they give a 'lonesome ring' to tone the bell and then tap it as many times as the person for whom it is tolled is years old. They all quit work as a mark of respect to the dead. Mr. Townsend said that there would be a big funeral at the Beulah church today and that the funeral sermon would be preached by Rev. Mitchell of Arthur City, who is considered one of the oldest preachers of this section.'
