Lucy Brooks Bays received a Texas Confederate Pension #24963 for service of her husband William Alexander Bays. An abstract of the pension shows: she lived at Deport, filed 20 Nov 1913, approved 1 Mar 1914, he died 9 Feb 1902 in Raines Co., TX, they married 9 Jul 1862 (or 3rd) in Grant Co., AR, she was age 73, born in Bedford Co., TN, lived in Texas since 1890, lived in Deport 'about a year or longer', he served from 9 Jul 1861 to close of war in Co. A, 11th Infantry (no state). L. Bays and D. W. Boles of Lamar Co. swore they knew her on 29 Sep 1913. B. F. Hill age 72 of Idabell, OK testified he was in the 11th AR Infantry Co. A, and he served with him. Mortuary Warrant of Lucy Bays in file, taken out by L. Bays, son, she died 27 Nov 1922 in Reno, Lamar Co., Edgar Wilson was undertaker and sent body to Elm Cemetery in Raines County, TX. L. B. Palmer certified she died of cerebral hemorrhage. In file is guardianship papers of Lucy were she was declared of unsound mind on 17 Jul 1922.
